The Welsh Valleys collection

The landscape has always been my source of refuge. It’s a place of comfort, clarity, far better at cleaning my mind than any therapy or self care ever could. I find a deep connection to places that I return to, year after year, like a migratory albatross returning to her mate.
But the landscape has its extremes too, and nowhere has this been more apparent to me than in the valleys of Wales. The rugged Welsh landscape is bound by cycles of weather, microclimates, birth and destruction, the scars of industry, the march of modernism.
So I’ve felt like capturing the spirit of these beautiful places in paint, and have battled with these landscapes for years, looking for the balance between the almost melancholy atmosphere of the lonely hilltops and the splashes of vibrant greens and lilac that appear like a rainbow after a storm.
These Welsh landscape paintings have become a collection, growing accidentally and organically as I found I was painting the same scenes over and over. But with new tools, new medium including collage at my disposal, I’ve been able to explore this subject in more detail and with a clearer vision.
It’s delving into the tension, the raw beauty of these places, depicting seemingly opposite qualities of light and dark in a limited space.
I hope you’ll enjoy browsing this collection as much as I enjoyed painting them!
